Support tools

A command line, the running programs, a system report and saved scripts for the computer you are helping.

Open the support tools#

Press Support tools in the session toolbar. The button is there when the other computer offers the tools; only Windows computers do.

  • The tools need control to be allowed in the session.
  • The person at the other computer is asked once per session. They are told that you will be able to run commands, see and end running programs, and read a report about the computer. In an unattended session nobody is asked.
  • If they decline, press Ask again when they are ready.

Command line#

On the Command line tab, choose PowerShell or Command Prompt, type a command and press Enter.

  • Commands run on the other computer as the person signed in there.
  • That computer keeps a log of every line that is run.
  • Two command lines can be open at once.
  • Copy output copies what was printed.

Running programs#

The Running programs tab lists the programs on the other computer with their processor and memory use. Search by name or number, and press Refresh for a new reading.

Important

End program closes a program at once, without a chance to save. Anything unsaved in it is lost.

System report#

The System report tab asks the other computer for its details, which takes a few seconds: the machine and its serial number, the system and its version, processor, memory, graphics, drives, network adapters, installed programs and updates.

Save as text or Save as JSON keeps a copy on your device.

Saved scripts#

On the Saved scripts tab, press New script to save commands you use often: give it a name, choose what it runs in, and write one command per line.

  • Scripts are kept in your browser only. Do not put passwords in a script.
  • Before anything is run you are shown the lines. Run these lines sends them, one after another, to a new command line on the other computer.
  • They run as the person signed in there, and cannot be taken back.

Restart and lock#

Two actions that the keyboard cannot ask for:

  • Restart computer: the person there may be asked to allow it. Anything unsaved there may be lost. The page then tries to reconnect for up to 15 minutes, and the computer only comes back once someone has signed in to Windows on it.
  • Lock computer: the computer locks, and you cannot see or use it again in this session until someone there unlocks it.
  • Both are in the Keys and shortcuts menu of the toolbar and need control to be allowed. Restart is offered only when the other computer allows it, and locking is not available while one app only is shared.
