Files and the clipboard
Copy files and folders both ways in the file manager, resume a broken copy, drag and drop, and pass text or files through the clipboard.
Open the file manager#
Press Files in the session toolbar. The file manager has two sides: This device, and the other device.
- The person at the other device is asked whether this session may see its files. They are asked once per session. In an unattended session nobody is asked.
- File transfer has to be allowed for the session. If it is switched off on the other device, by its organisation or by your plan, the file manager says so.
- A file can be up to 8 GB.
Your side: a folder, or picked files#
In Chrome or Edge on a computer, press Choose a folder. You can then browse that folder, upload from it, and downloads are saved straight into it.
Other browsers cannot show your folders. Press Choose files to pick what to upload. Downloads are then saved by the browser to its usual downloads folder, up to 1 GB each.
Upload and download#
- On the other device's side, open the folder you want to work in. Files cannot be copied into the list of drives.
- To send files, select them on your side and press Upload.
- To fetch files, select them on the other side and press Download.
- Watch the progress under Transfers. A copy can be cancelled there.
Nothing is overwritten: a file whose name already exists is kept beside the old one, numbered.
Folders#
- Upload a folder copies a whole folder to the other device. You are shown how many files and folders it holds before it starts.
- To download a folder, choose a folder on your device first; the folder is copied into it. A browser that cannot show your folders cannot save whole folders: open the folder and download its files.
- A folder with more than 2,000 files or 500 folders has to be copied in smaller parts.
- New folder and Rename work on both sides, except that browsers cannot rename folders on your own device.
- Deleting on the other device moves the item to its Recycle Bin, where the person there can restore it. Deleting on your own side through the browser deletes for good.
Resume a broken copy#
A copy that stopped part-way, for example because the connection dropped, is listed under Unfinished copies in the file manager the next time you are connected to that device. Press Resume to carry on from where it stopped, or Discard.
- For an upload, the other device kept the part that had arrived.
- For a download, the first part is in the folder you chose on your device. If it is no longer there, download the file again.
- If the file on the other device changed in the meantime, it cannot be resumed: download it again.
Drag and drop#
- Drop files from your computer on the other device's side to upload them into the folder that is open there.
- If you have not chosen a folder on your side, dropping files on your side adds them to the list to upload.
- To put files into a folder you chose on your own device, use your computer's own file window, not the file manager.
Clipboard text#
When the clipboard is allowed, Send my clipboard in the toolbar sends the text on your clipboard to the other device. Text copied on the other device is offered to you: press Copy it here. Your browser may ask you to allow clipboard access for this site.
Clipboard files#
Files can also travel by copy and paste. This needs both the clipboard and file transfer to be allowed; the file manager does not have to be open.
- From the other computer to you: when files are copied there, a notice lists them. Press Fetch to bring them to your device.
- From you to the other computer: open Session tools, Send files to paste there, and press Choose files. The files are copied over and put on that computer's clipboard. Paste there, with Ctrl+V, where you want them. This replaces what was on its clipboard.
