Recording a session
Who can record, from where, what the other side is told, and why recording is sometimes not offered.
Who can record, and where#
The person who connects can record the session to a file on their own device. Recording is available in the browser viewer on this website and in the RFDesk apps for phones and for macOS. The Windows app does not record.
Record in the browser#
- Open Session tools in the toolbar.
- Under Record this session, press Record.
- A Recording badge shows for as long as you record. Press Stop to finish.
- The recording is a video of the remote screen, with what you hear when the session has sound. It is saved as an MP4 or WebM video.
- Where the browser allows it, you choose where the file goes and it is written as you record.
- Otherwise the browser keeps the recording in memory until you stop, so keep it short: it is stopped and saved at 512 MB.
- Some browsers cannot record at all. The viewer then says so.
The notice on the other side#
The other device is told as soon as you start, and shows its user a notice for as long as you record. If the other device cannot be told, the recording does not start.
When recording is not allowed#
The person at the other computer decides whether the other side may record: RFDesk there has a Recording setting. A team can also lock recording off on its computers with a policy. When the other device does not allow recording, the viewer does not offer it.
Where the recording is kept#
The file is saved on the device of the person who recorded. Keep it as carefully as anything else that shows another person's screen.
